Cost of building a backyard court, home outdoor court price [2026]

Are you wondering how much it costs to build your own sports court? We have prepared a summary of the cost of such an investment for you.

When planning your private court in the garden, you should first ask yourself five fundamental questions:

  • How much space can I allocate for a sports court?
  • Does the site for the future backyard court have a hard surface (e.g., asphalt, concrete, paving stones)?
  • What sports will be played there?
  • What is the time frame for this investment / how long do we plan to use it for?
  • Who constructs the court in the garden? Myself or a specialized team?

Once we know the answers to the above questions, we will be able to move on to specific calculations. However, before we do so, let's take a look at each element of the multifunctional court construction separately.

Square footage and cost of building a sports court in the garden

Naturally, the larger the court, the higher the total investment, but at the same time the lower the unit cost. A square meter of a court will be cheaper at the construction of a 600 m² tennis court than the construction of a 30m² basketball court. This is due, among other things, to fixed costs, which have less impact on the final price in the case of larger courts. At the same time, manufacturers are always more willing to make price concessions for larger areas.

With large differences in dimensions, the unit price can vary by as much as several dozen percent per square meter. The price of a home sports court is also influenced by sports surface that we choose, which is why we provide a price range rather than an exact price.

Groundworks for a backyard sports court

If you already have a hardened surface where you plan to build your future sports court, you are in a great position. Half of the cost of constructing a sports court in your garden is already behind you! However, if the the substructure is not prepared (e.g. grass, sand), you will need to build a foundation before laying the sports surface. This will ensure that the surface of your sports court is even, stable, and will serve you for years to come.

The form of the substructure is up to you; it can be asphalt, concrete slabs, or paving stones, for example. It all depends on your preferences and long-term vision for the development of the area:

  • If you are looking for a cheap and durable solution, choose concrete.
  • If you are looking for a durable solution with slightly better shock absorption properties than concrete, choose an asphalt base.
  • If mobility is important to you (you do not rule out moving the sports court to another location in the future or using the area for different purpose later on), choose paving stones. Paving stones are also a wise choice if you have a lot of plantings nearby. If the root grows under the substructure and distorts it, it will be easy to fix in the case of paving stones.

The price will also be affected by your location. Depending on the region, the cost of foundation work can vary by up to approximately 20%.

Due to the multitude of factors, it is difficult to give a single price for the construction of a foundation. However, on average, we can assume a cost of PLN 200-300 net/m² (materials + labor) for calculation purposes.

When you purchase backyard court from us, you can also count on our support in constructing the substructure. Due to the complexity of the subject, we price each order individually. Feel free to contact us 🙂

If you prefer to have the substructure built by a local company (which, to be honest, is often a cheaper solution, e.g. for logistical reasons), we will provide you with technical guidelines on the parameters of the foundation to ensure that the court will serve you for many years to come.

A basketball court in the garden, a tennis court next to the house, or maybe a multi-purpose sports court in the backyard?

The disciplines you choose will determine the cost of sports equipment and the sports surface model. Consider what sports you want to play in order to optimize the layout of your private sports court and the placement of sports equipment.

The prices of sports equipment can vary significantly depending on the solution we choose. For example:

  • A sturdy basketball hoop can be purchased for as little as one thousand Euro. When choosing structures that are built to last and looking for a top-of-the-line product, you have to be prepared to spend between 1 000 and 5 000 Euro.
  • A tennis net and posts cost around one thousand Euro,
  • You can expect a similar price for volleyball posts and nets,
  • A soccer or handball goal will cost from several hundred to several thousand Euro.

When constructing a court you may consider installing a backstop to prevent the ball from escaping into other parts of the garden and damaging plants (or windows :). Here, the cost will mainly depend on the size of the pitch, the height of the ball catcher, and its quality (e.g., galvanized and rust-resistant, or cheaper, only painted, and less resistant). On average, the cost of a backstop, depending on the size of the field, will range from a few to several thousand Euro.

How many years am I planning the investment for? Polypropylene sports surface – how much does it cost?

If you are interested in modular sports surfaces, you are probably wondering what the difference is between polypropylene sports tiles from different manufacturers. Prices between individual tiles can vary even by several dozen Euro per square meter!

It all depends on the composition of the tile, its technical parameters, construction, guarantee and durability (both of the material itself and the color); in short, on its quality.

The cheapest options may be suitable if the court is planned for short-term use. The surface may deteriorate quite quickly, and the color may lose its intensity. Depending on the intensity of use and weather conditions, we count this time in months or up to several years. There is a considerable risk of having to carry out regular repairs so that the surface does not pose a threat to users (e.g., stepping into a defect in the surface can easily lead to a sprained ankle). It is also worth paying attention to the sports parameters (such as shock absorption), which will be at a fairly low level. Considering the cost of the entire investment, its long-term dimension, and the fact that polypropylene surfaces are supposed to be maintenance-free, we do not recommend this price range.

As the price increases, individual aspects of the sports surface improve:

  • durability (10- and 15-year warranties)
  • fade resistance
  • technical parameters such as traction, drying speed (permeability), ball bounce, vertical deformation, critical fall height, lock strength, and shock absorption properties (both vertical and, very importantly, lateral, which are a major advantage of polypropylene sports surfaces over other sports surfaces)
  • maintenance-free (significantly lower risk of damage, maintenance is limited to occasional washing the court or blowing leaves off the surface)
  • certifications from sports federations such as FIBA (basketball), FIVB (volleyball), ITF (tennis)

In summary, the prices of modular sports surfaces range from approximately 25 Euro to 80 Euro net per square meter. The price ceiling we choose depends on our needs in terms of performance, durability, safety, and aesthetics. Our observations show that in most cases of building a home sports field in the garden, surfaces in the price range of 55-80 Euro net/m² for smaller courts (where higher unit price is acceptable) and PLN 35-55 Euro net/m² for larger courts will be optimal.

Who constructs the court in the garden? Myself or a specialized team?

The cost of installation also affects the price of building a home sports court. A sports surface made of polypropylene tiles is relatively easy to install. Its installation is similar to putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Painting the court lines and installing the sports equipment is a slightly greater challenge.

If you are looking to save money, you can also do these tasks yourself.

We offer a comprehensive installation service for the surfaces we sell (surfaces, sports equipment, court lines), ensuring safe and high-quality installation.

Alternatively, installation can be outsourced to local professionals. The price of the service depends on the amount of work and the location of the investment, but on average, the cost can be estimated between 6 and 10 Euro net per square meter.

SUMMARY: How much will it cost to build a private sports court in your garden in 2026?

To present the total price of a residential sport court, we will make the following assumptions:

  • We are building a multi-purpose 165m2 basketball and soccer court o powierzchni 165m2 (standard size of a 3×3 basketball court)
  • we build the substructure from paving stones in the Mazowieckie Region in Poland
  • on the backyard court there will be installed 1 basketball hoop and 2 football goals
  • installation of sports modular tiles, sports equipment, and line painting on the customer's side for cost optimization
  • we do not install a backstop

Individual components of the investment:

  • high-quality modular flooring = 65 EUR /m² * 165 m² = 10 725 EUR net
  • substructure construction + materials = 60 EUR /m² * 165 m² = 9 900 EUR net
  • basketball hoop + 2 goals = 820 EUR + 2 * 600 EUR = 3 020 EUR net
  • installation = 0 EUR net

TOTAL = 23 645 EUR net (29 083 EUR gross)

It is worth noting that the cost of the investment will be significantly reduced if you already have a hardened surface on which you can install the modular sports surface.

In this case, the total price of the backyard sports court will be 13 745 EUR net (16 906 EUR gross).

The above calculation is only an example intended to give an idea of how much it costs to build your private multi-sport court. Prices may vary depending on the curt configuration and location, especially when it comes to the groundworks. Therefore, the above calculations should be treated as indicative only.

There are many factors that can influence the final price of your own backyard sports court.
